How the movies, novels and comics of my childhood influenced the look and feel of my science fiction
When I was a kid, in those long-lost, seemingly endless summers of the 1980s, a friend and I used to scavenge among the yellow grass and cracked soil of the local waste ground for rusty car engine parts and broken radio circuits that we used to make clunky, industrial-looking ships for our Star Wars figures. Looking at the ships in my novels, I guess that aesthetic never really left me.
